Портреты важнейших политических и государственных деятелей России XX века от первых советских до ныне действующих выполнены в традиционной технике мозаики. Монументальность, убедительность и долговечность мозаичных произведений особенно ценилась творцами «нерушимого» советского строя. Однако время не щадит не только памятники искусства, но и самих вождей – все заметнее становятся «утраты» их тщательно сконструированных исторических образов и значений. Перед нами элегическое рассуждение на тему Sic transit gloria mundi (лат. Так проходит мирская слава), знакомую еще древним римлянам и грекам, введшим в обиход мозаичный портрет.

Time, the devourer of all things. The series of portraits features key Russian politicians of the 20th century, from first soviet leaders to the presently active figures, made in the traditional mosaic technique whose monumental, persuasive, and enduring nature was so much appreciated by the creators of the ‘imperishable’ soviet regime. However, time spares neither the works of art, no the leaders, making the ‘defects’ of the carefully constructed images and meanings so conspicuous. This sic transit gloria mundi elegy was popular even with ancient Greeks and Romans who were the first to introduce mosaic portraits.
